It was believed that Bombay is a corrupted name of Mumbai, given by British government when they were ruling over India before India’s independence. Bombay was one of the hub and port of British empire to run their government in India. Bombay was reformed by britishers with their large civil engineering projects.
Since then the city was identified as "Bombay" nationally and internationally.
One of the leading political party in maharastra, "Shiv Sena", founded by Bal Thackeray was trying to rename the city from Bombay to Mumbai
This name Mumbai actually taken from Local Hindu goddess Mumbadevi.A temple of Mumbadevi is located in Bhuleshwar area in South Mumbai. The original temple was built in 1737.She is depicted as a black stone sculpture in the temple.
Shiv sena had been trying to get this name for the city but they were not in ruling party, therefore it was difficult to do so.
In 1995, Shiv sena won the state election and form a government in Maharastra state. After Shiv sena won election, they officially rename city from Bombay to Mumbai, although many people had opposed by saying city would lose its identity.
